What vehicle tracking costs, and whether it can be free
These are the questions we get asked most about price. The short version: phone-based tracking really is free and really is limited, and a dedicated tracker carries a running cost because it carries a SIM.
How can I track a vehicle for free?
If the driver consents and carries a phone, you can share live location for free using Google Maps location sharing on Android or Find My on iPhone. That is genuinely free and works well for a family car. Its limits are real: it tracks the phone rather than the vehicle, it stops when the phone is off or flat, and it produces no trip history, no mileage report and no alerts. For a business that needs records rather than a live dot, it is not enough.
Is there a free GPS vehicle tracker?
Not with ongoing service, and the reason is physical rather than commercial. A dedicated tracker sends data over a mobile network, which requires a SIM and mobile data, and somebody pays for that every month. Any product advertised as a free GPS tracker is either phone-based, selling the hardware at a margin that covers a fixed data period, or Bluetooth-only with a range of a few metres.
What is the best vehicle tracker with no monthly fee?
Trackers sold with no monthly fee usually fall into two groups. Bluetooth tags like AirTags have no running cost because they have no mobile connection; they are found by other phones passing nearby, which makes them useful for finding a parked car and unreliable for following one in motion. The second group bundles several years of data into the purchase price, so the fee exists but is paid up front. Neither gives you live tracking with history at no cost.
How much does vehicle tracking cost in Malta?
It is a monthly per-vehicle subscription covering the SIM data, the platform, stored history and the iOS and Android apps, plus a one-time cost for the device. What moves the number is fleet size, contract length and install type: a plug-in OBD unit you fit yourself is cheaper to get running than a hardwired install, which involves one of our auto-electricians for about an hour. Because it varies with all of those, we quote rather than publish a price. Ask us and you will get a figure for your actual fleet.
Do GPS trackers need a SIM card?
Yes, any tracker that reports live location does. It determines position from satellites but needs a mobile network to send that position anywhere.
